Fort Hill Community School

This is a modern, striving school with it's feet firmly planted in an ancient and prestigious past. Fort Hill is built in a unique and attractive setting on the site of an Iron Age Hill Fort on the North West outskirts of Basingstoke, Hampshire, England, being the first purpose built community comprehensive school in Hampshire. This is reflected not only in the excellence and breadth of facilities available, but more significantly in the range of experience available to the pupils.

In the Spring of 1977 work commenced on the construction of a school on the site of the hillfort. The school was to be known as Fort Hill Community School. A great deal of effort was put into attempting to create the atmosphere within the building of period construction with low roof lines, red bricks, sympathetic planting and the use of ramparts and courtyards. This was successful to the extent that the design won architectural awards for the design concept and methods of construction. The school occupies the site today and embodies the principles of Community education espoused by its founders in serving the educational needs of the population of Winklebury, a task the Fort has continued for thousands of years.

The Community Centre offers a wide variety of activities for all age groups. Pupils become accustomed to sharing the campus with groups which range from the Child Welfare Clinic and Pre-school Playgroup, through Keep Fit to Art and Word Processing classes. The presence of such a wide range of ages and interests on the site reinforces the school's belief that education is a life-long process.

Fort Hill Community School's prime purpose is to provide an atmosphere for learning in which the confidence to succeed is stimulated and developed by producing a high quality education.

They are a small, forward thinking school, taking pride in the contribution they make in the development of their young people. They are proud of them and all they achieve. There is a strong belief in the values of hard work, discipline and good manners.

The Virtual Schools site is intended as learning and teaching resource with the whole school involved in the development of content and the creation of copy.

In designing the website we were aware of the ancient links and the significance of the school motif that incorporates the horse (the emblem of the Atrabates tribe who populated the area 2000 years ago), the surrounding wheat storks and the outline of the hill fort. These were animated together with images of the evocative architectural design of the school and its present day occupants the staff and pupils, to create a site that reflects the schools ambitions and pride.
